What does Mathematics look like at Downholland Haskayne?

Our vision is to inspire a love of mathematics through positive attitudes, curiosity and a sense of discovery. At Downholland Haskayne CE Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality mathematics education that engages and challenges all pupils, developing confident, resilient mathematicians who recognise the importance of maths in everyday life and the wider world.

We believe that the language of mathematics is universal and that its beauty and power are embedded in the world around us. As a school, we are committed to a mastery approach, where children develop a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts. Pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through carefully structured teaching, regular opportunities to reason, and the application of knowledge through problem-solving. This enables them to recall and apply their learning with confidence, accuracy and independence.

How do we implement Mathematics at Downholland Haskayne?

At Downholland Haskayne CE Primary School, we use the White Rose Maths Mastery Scheme to support high-quality teaching and learning. This scheme is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and ensure progression across all year groups. It supports a whole-class teaching approach, allowing teachers to focus on developing deep conceptual understanding while identifying and addressing misconceptions promptly.

Children revisit key mathematical concepts regularly, strengthening their understanding and making meaningful connections across different areas of maths. This approach ensures that pupils can apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts and understand the relevance of mathematics in real-life situations. It also supports the transfer of learning into long-term memory, enabling children to recall and use their knowledge fluently across the curriculum.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, we use White Rose Maths to provide a strong foundation in early mathematics. Learning is carefully structured to develop a deep understanding of number, beginning with a focus on numbers to 5 and progressing through the year to cover the full EYFS statutory framework. Opportunities for exploring shape, space and measure are woven throughout, ensuring a broad and balanced mathematical experience that prepares children for the National Curriculum.

We have high expectations for all pupils and aim for children to move through the curriculum at broadly the same pace. Teachers provide appropriate support and challenge to ensure all learners can succeed and make progress.

Where needed, some children may follow a more personalised curriculum tailored to their individual needs, as outlined in their Individual Education Plans or EHCPs. This adapted provision maintains clear progression and aligns with the wider mathematics curriculum.

Mathematics at Downholland Haskayne is enriched through a range of engaging opportunities, including outdoor learning experiences, themed events and participation in national initiatives such as World Maths Day and Maths Week England. These experiences help to bring mathematics to life and foster enthusiasm and enjoyment for the subject.
