Intent

At Downholland Haskayne CE Primary School, the intent of our Art curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement in the area of Art. Our ambitious Art curriculum develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Children’s knowledge is built upon year on year, and cross-curricular approaches are implemented wherever possible. We follow a new primary art curriculum designed by ‘Access Art’, consisting of  pathways for all year groups, designed to inspire and enable high-quality visual arts teaching and learning in primary schools. Designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills, this holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure your pupils learn through art, as well as about art. This ethos fits in at our school as we value the importance of Art knowledge and the cultural capital this can develop for our children. We recognise that exposure to Art and the culture it creates, adds significant value to our children’s understanding of creativity and craftsmanship in the wider community. The curriculum has appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to explore and investigate, create and evaluate artwork as set out in the National Curriculum. We will enable the children to reach and exceed their potential through appropriate challenge and support where needed – to provide the most inclusive approach possible. It will enable pupils to create art work with a real purpose in terms of displaying, celebrating and sharing the work they create. Furthermore, showcasing the skills and progress that they have made.

At Downholland Haskayne, we provide a positive, nurturing environment that ensures every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in Art and Design. We truly embrace the saying ‘’All children are artists,’’ by Pablo Picasso.
