Physical Education Curriculum Intent Statement

At Downholland Haskayne CE Primary, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils—regardless of age, ability, or background—to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport, and healthy living. In our mixed-age classrooms, we embrace the unique opportunities for peer learning, leadership, and collaboration, fostering an environment where every child can thrive physically, socially, and emotionally.

We aim to:

  • Promote Physical Literacy: Equip pupils with fundamental movement skills and the confidence to participate in a broad range of physical activities.

  • Encourage Personal Growth: Foster resilience, determination, and self-esteem by setting personalised challenges that cater to individual needs and abilities.

  • Cultivate Social Skills: Develop teamwork, communication, and leadership through cooperative games and group activities, enabling older pupils to mentor younger peers.

  • Ensure Inclusivity: Adapt lessons to accommodate all learners, including those with special educational needs or disabilities, ensuring equal access to physical education.

  • Promote Health and Well-being: Educate pupils on the importance of physical activity for mental and physical health, instilling habits that support a healthy lifestyle.

  • Provide Diverse Opportunities: Offer a wide range of activities—including dance, gymnastics, athletics, team sports, and outdoor adventures—to engage all interests and talents.

  • Celebrate Achievement: Recognise and celebrate individual and team accomplishments, both within school and in the wider community, to motivate continued participation and effort.

Through this comprehensive approach, we strive to create a dynamic and supportive PE environment that not only meets the statutory requirements but also enriches our pupils' educational experience, preparing them for a healthy and active future.
