Religious Education Curriculum Statement
At Downholland Haksayne CE Primary School, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive and inclusive exploration of faith, belief, and spirituality. We follow a 4-year rolling programme to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their year group, engage with a broad and balanced RE curriculum that fosters spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.
Intent
Our RE curriculum aims to:
-
Develop pupils' understanding of Christianity, as well as other principal religions and worldviews represented in Great Britain.
-
Encourage respect for all people, promoting tolerance and understanding in a diverse society.
-
Foster critical thinking and personal reflection on spiritual and moral issues.
-
Enable pupils to articulate their own beliefs and values while understanding those of others.
Implementation
We utilize a 4-year rolling programme, particularly effective in our mixed-age classes, to ensure continuity and progression in learning. This approach allows pupils to revisit key concepts and themes, deepening their understanding over time. Our curriculum is informed by the locally agreed syllabus and incorporates resources such as 'Questful RE to provide a rich and varied learning experience.
Each unit of study is framed around a "Big Question" to stimulate inquiry and discussion. For example, pupils might explore questions like "How can we help those who don’t have a good harvest?" or "How do our celebrations reflect the true meaning of Christmas?" This inquiry-based approach encourages pupils to engage deeply with the material and develop their own perspectives.
Impact
Through our RE curriculum, pupils will:
-
Gain a coherent understanding of religious and non-religious worldviews.
-
Demonstrate respect and empathy towards others with different beliefs and practices.
-
Develop the ability to reflect on their own beliefs and values.
-
Achieve age-appropriate outcomes as outlined in our assessment framework, showing progression in knowledge and understanding.
We assess pupils' learning through a combination of formative and summative assessments, including observations, discussions, and written work. This ensures that we can track progress and provide support where needed
